Singling out Day of ‘Ashura for Fasting
Q. As it relates to fasting the Day of ‘Ashura in (the month of) Muharram, if a person only fasts the Day of ‘Ashura without fasting the day before or the day after, will it be valid?
A. Yes, it is valid. However, he is leaving off what is better. It is better to fast a day before it or a day after it (along with it). This is best. That is, he should fast two days: the 9th and 10th. Or he may fast the 10th and 11th. He may also fast all three days: the 9th, 10th and 11th. This is what is best so to differ from the Jews.
س- صيام يوم عاشوراء من محرم، إذا صام الشخص يوم عاشوراء من محرم فقط، ولم يصم يومًا قبله، ولا يومًا بعده؛ هل يجزئه ذلك؟
ج – نعم يجزئه؛ لكن ترك الأفضل، الأفضل أن يصوم قبله يومًا، أو بعده يومًا، هذا هو الأفضل، يعني: يصوم يومين، التاسع والعاشر، أو العاشر والحادي عشر، أو يصوم الثلاثة: التاسع، والعاشر، والحادي عشر، هذا أفضل، خلافًا لليهود، نعم.
