The Best Acts (of Ibādah) that are done in the Last 10 Nights of Ramaḍān
Sufyān ath-Thawrī (رحمه الله) was reported to have said: “Duā’ in those nights (i.e. last 10 nights) is more beloved to me than ṣalāh; and if he recited (Qur’ān) and made duā’ (at the same time) and asked Allāh in duā’, then perhaps this is better.”
Ibn Rajab (رحمه الله) said after mentioning this statement: “What he meant is that excessive duā’ is better than ṣalāh that is rid of excessive duā’. However, if he recites (Qur’ān) and makes duā’ then this is good.
The Prophet ﷺ would exert himself in the nights of Ramaḍān and would recite the Qur’ān in a slow rhythmic style. He would not encounter an āyah that speaks about mercy except that he asked for it, nor would he encounter an āyah that speaks about the punishment except that he would seek refuge from it. So he combined ṣalāh, recitation, duā’, and pondering, (upon the meaning of what was recited) which are the best and the most perfect of acts that are done in these ten nights and other then them – and Allāh knows best.”
